Slack tub. Used to quench metal from the forge. Wooden tub painted green, possibly adapted from a washing machine. 14 1/2" x 25 1/2" diam. Made like a barrel, with staves. Used by Joseph Vagg (1879-1956) in his blacksmith shop (built 1922), Childs. Donated by Mrs. Joseph Vagg, Childs.

Upsetter, Tire - 1975.6.175
Upsetter, tire. aka "a tire shrinker." Used to reduce the circumference of iron tires. The tire is heated in the fire, a dent is made in the tire with a hammer, then the tire is placed in the upsetter, held so that it cannot move, and the dent is pounded flat.
